The neighborhood of Frogtown is bordered by the Los Angeles river, and is a prime area for development in conjunction with the restoration of the river. This single family home with an unpermitted garage was targeted as an opportunity to create more commercial space to serve the neighborhood and the LA River bike lane. We designed an open commercial space utilizing the same footprint of the existing house, raising the roof to provide a more comfortable, open environment while maintaining the historic structure. For the garage, we maintained the existing historic structure and added an internal primary structure. Melding historic and new elements to breathe new life and possibility into a rapidly changing neighborhood.
Terra Cotta Middle School needed a new entry to the school that better served the students, parents, and administration. We designed a Y-shaped desk, making the circulation through the space more intuitive. Midway through the design process, the administration felt a need to increase security. The desk design was adjusted to accommodate the security storefront while still maintaining the intuitive design.
